September 5th marks International Day of Charity by the UN, to celebrate we are sharing some incredible organizations that we would encourage you and your community to support and donate to. All organizations mentioned support the wellbeing, health, justice and safety of the elderly. We thank you for taking the time to donate and support whenever and wherever possible!

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), Alzheimer’s Association and Alzheimer’s Society of Canada

With over 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s in 2021 ,it is likely you know of someone in your close circle that has faced this difficult disease. Like many diseases Alzheimer’s not only has an impact on the person who is ill but the affects ripple across their family and community. These large organizations are involved in research, clinical trials and advocacy, they also provide support groups, helplines and education programs to guide families and caregivers as the disease progresses.

Meals on Wheels America and Meals on Wheels Ontario

Be sure to search for your local Meals on Wheels chapter, they are located across North America, bringing nutritious meals and food to seniors who are unable to shop for themselves. Whether that be because of health, finances or physical location, these groups have been working especially hard through the pandemic in order to keep seniors safe and well fed.

Pets for the Elderly

Pets for the Elderly is one that was more recently introduced to our team. It is proven that companionship and connection with animals can have a positive impact on both mental and physical health at any age. This incredible charity works to bring together shelter animals in need with seniors in the community.

Honor Flight Network

Another innovative organization, centred around veterans. The team at Honor Flight Network works to transport Veterans of all levels and ages to Washington, DC, to visit the war memorials dedicated to their lives and hard work.

Help Age Canada

The Help Age Canada vision is “a world in which all older persons will lead secure, healthy, active and dignified lives”. Their teams are working all across the world in developing and developed nations as part of the Help Age Network to promote the wellbeing and inclusion of older women and men, reducing poverty and discrimination in old age.

Thinking something more local? Check in with your local seniors or community centre, or food bank, often there are great initiatives already set up to support those aging in your community directly. Got one that you want to share? Let us know in the comments!
